“We are surrounded by Bureaucrats, Note Takers, Literalists, Manual Readers, TGIF Laborers, Map Followers, and Fearful Employees.” – Seth Godin (Linchpin)
Those who does not know what TGIF means, it is ‘Thank God it is Friday’. Most of us are in fact TGIF Laborers. We are map followers and note takers. We love to be instructed and we want manuals to do something. We wait for our boss to tell us what to do next. We wait for Fridays and we want to get released from the cage called work desks.
For decades, these TGIF employees, map readers and instruction followers have been very successful in our industry. They have been ruling the world. I can see lots of such testers around me. These test case readers, tool users, defect report broadcasters are everywhere doing routine work they are asked to do. They remain successful employees (actually
successful employee ids).
When you read this, stop for a while and think – are you one of them? Are you just a resource who earns per hour billing rate from the client for your employer? Are you just an employee id and your existence does not matter for your employer?
Come out of the cage. Become an indispensable part of your employer. You are worth more than the salary you get. Do more than you are asked to do. Linchpins are not laid off; TGIF laborers are.
