Has hiring practice in testing ever been tested? How many bugs are there in the present hiring practices in testing? Is anybody fixing those? How do we identify a fake interviewer from a real interviewer? Yes, I said interviewer, not the candidate.

We always discriminate people from different domain and industry. We will always try to recruit somebody who is from engineering or computer background – not from other domains such as BPO, Medical sales or HR background. We also believe people with gaps in between two jobs are not the best ones to test a product. We tend to filter out people who have gap period between two jobs or who does not have a job in hand now. I have seen many female testers who left their jobs because they got married and they had a kid to care about. Now that the kid is grown up, they can join back testing job. But we would not listen.

Asking definition based question does not bring out the best in a testing guy. Any one can just Google it and answer your questions and can clear your bad interview. Asking ‘frequently asked question in testing’ and judging a candidate is an old fashioned trick. Why don’t we come up with a better hiring practice such as giving the candidate something to test? Can we accept candidates based on knowledge and passion for testing instead of looking what is written in resume and how many certification exam the candidate has passed? Sadly, this time the bugs in hiring process of testers are to be fixed by testers only.

So let us take a New Year resolution – to adopt a good hiring practice in Software Testing domain. I am not a firm believer of New Year resolution thing but it’s better to have tried and failed than to never try at all. I hope you will enjoy our series – “A fake Tester’s Diary” in this issue of Testing Circus. Jai Ho Testing!
